Can Dogs Eat Salmon?

Safe to eat
In moderation

Yes! Cooked, plain salmon is an excellent source of omega-3s and protein for dogs!

Salmon is one of the best fish you can give your dog, provided it's properly cooked. It's rich in omega-3 fatty acids that support skin, coat, and joint health. Salmon is also a great protein source and is often used in high-quality dog foods. However, raw salmon can contain parasites that cause salmon poisoning disease, which can be fatal, so it must always be thoroughly cooked.

👨‍🍳 How to Prepare Salmon for Dogs

Cook salmon thoroughly to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C). Baking, grilling, or poaching without oils or seasonings is best. Remove all bones carefully - even small pin bones. Let cool before serving. Plain canned salmon (in water) is also safe if bones are removed. Never use salmon prepared with garlic, onions, or seasonings.

Warnings & Precautions

  • ⚠️NEVER feed raw salmon - risk of salmon poisoning disease
  • ⚠️Remove all bones before serving
  • ⚠️Avoid salmon skin if seasoned or fried
  • ⚠️Farmed salmon may contain more contaminants
  • ⚠️Too much can cause vitamin A toxicity over time
  • ⚠️Watch for fish allergies (though uncommon)
  • ⚠️Smoked salmon is too high in salt

Dogs with pancreatitis should have limited amounts due to fat content. If your dog has a fish allergy, avoid completely. Dogs on special diets should have salmon portions calculated into their meal plan. Never give raw salmon from the Pacific Northwest due to high risk of salmon poisoning disease from parasites.
